Author of Native Son, Richard "Nathaniel" Wright, was born on September 4, 1908 in Natchez, Mississippi, to a rural school teacher (his mother), and an illiterate sharecropper (his father). In 1914, Wright, aged five, and his family migrated north, specifically to Memphis, Tennessee, where his father would soon abandon the two. As a result, Richard's education was rather "inconsistent", as he would have to jump around from school to school, and would soon cease when Wright entered ninth grade. Nevertheless, Wright was wise for his years, and possessed great talent. A talent primarily focused in literature, as he voraciously consumed the works of Feodor Dostoevsky and Theodore Dreiser. Therefore, at the age of nineteen, Wright moved to Chicago in the winter of 1927. Some time following this, his family followed suit to live with Wright. Thus, he had to take up a multitude of jobs. Most of his lifetime, Wright had knew and lived under the unjust oppression of the early 20th. All of this knowledge, of which, Wright utilized in his infamous novel. In the early 1950s, Wright visited Africa in attempts to "find his roots". This venture produced a series of works. In his later life, Wright would eventually move to Paris following World War II. There, he passed away in the fall of 1960.

He started to attend a college, but he then chose to drop out. While living in Chicago, Richard started to become interested with the communist party. In the final years of his life, Richard had suffered from amoebic dysentery.He passed away while in a clinic in France.

Richard Wright was born in 1908 near Roxie, Mississippi U.S.—died November 28, 1960, Paris, France. Today he is known for being a novelist and short-story writer who was among the first African American writers to protest white treatment of blacks, notably in his novel Native Son (1940) and his autobiography, Black Boy (1945). He inaugurated the tradition of protest explored by other black writers after World War II.
